Mosaics

…but beautiful mosaics are made of broken pieces.

Lori J. Nelson

Mosaic art is traditionally a picture or pattern produced by arranging and cementing small colored pieces of material, like glass, tile or stone, onto a substrate or surface. The origin dates to Mesopotamia in the 3rd millennium BC, becoming widespread in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.

Similar to my work in other mediums, my mosaic pieces are somewhat unconventional and like my collage work, these mosaics sometimes tell stories, assembled together with a variety of materials. I like the idea of my mosaics being a patchwork, not unlike a quilt. I use glass and mirror pieces in combination with collected objects that I find of interest (such as beads, metal, shells and vintage items) and collage them together into an integrated piece. Some tell stories while others are about color and design to form texture and dimension. I use wood board, metal or even glass as my substrate, which allows for the colors to reflect light through.
